The Forum is DARPA-Sponsored Initiative Focused on Building Resilient and Diversified
[Fort Meade, Florida – July 31, 2025] Novaphos announced that it has joined the Critical Minerals Forum (CMF), which was established by DARPA to facilitate collaboration among industry, government and investors to address the supply chain for critical minerals in the US. Its membership will give Novaphos the opportunity to highlight the importance of reliable domestic phosphate supplies for both food and energy security and engage with other CMF members.
“Phosphates are critical to the U.S., both for food supply and for industrial products, yet the U.S. phosphate industry has been shrinking for decades,” said Novaphos President, Andrew “Woody” Lewis. “LFP lithium- ion batteries depend on purified phosphoric acid, and almost all of that is now being produced in China. The U.S. needs to develop its own pathway to a secure supply chain for this critical battery ingredient, and Novaphos technology will help make this happen. We can use more sustainable and efficient production techniques to create a better domestic phosphate supply chain.”
Novaphos technologies use low quality phosphate rock inputs—even waste mine tailings—to efficiently produce a high-quality phosphoric acid, more suited for demanding applications like battery cathodes. Novaphos can drive a resurgence in U.S. phosphate production by enabling the use of previously disregarded mineral resources and at a scale and pace adapted to the requirements of the U.S. battery industry. Avoided production wastes and useful calcium silicate coproducts are added advantages of Novaphos production processes.
ABOUT NOVAPHOS
Novaphos Inc. is a privately owned company that has developed proprietary processes for use in the phosphate industry. Novaphos technology allows phosphate producers to use low-quality phosphate rock to make high-quality phosphoric acid without producing any phosphogypsum wastes, representing the most significant technology development in decades for the global phosphate industry. Novaphos phosphoric acid can be used in agriculture and industry, including in LFP battery cathodes. The process is scalable, energy-efficient, and produces a useful calcium silicate construction aggregate byproduct instead of phosphogypsum. For more information, go to www.novaphos.com.
The Critical Minerals Forum facilitates the collaboration needed for increased and reliable production of critical minerals by convening leading companies across the minerals supply chain, investors and government institutions. The Forum has two primary objectives: developing actionable cost, price, supply, and demand projections with geographic granularity through partnership with DARPA's OPEN initiative; and providing a clearinghouse for expanded critical minerals supply chain projects, where market participants can share investment opportunities and financing requirements.
